Kyanite

According to an Eskimo legend, the Northern Lights were once imprisoned in the rocks along the coast of Labrador. It is told that a wandering Eskimo warrior found them and was able to free most of the lights with a mighty blow of his spear. Some of the lights were still trapped within the stone, and thus we have today the beautiful mineral known as labradorite.

Kyanite is named after the Greek word (Kyanos) for “blue”. Its color indeed can make it a lovely gem with a near sapphire-like blue. Usually its color is blue but also can be colorless, white, gray, green or yellow. Color is often not consistent throughout the crystal, often showing white streaks in a medium blue. Luster is vitreous to almost pearly. Its variable hardness is a significant characteristic that has to be taken in consideration by the gem-cutter. Hardness is 4- 4.5 (Mohs scale) when scratched parallel to the long axis of the crystal and 6-7 when cut perpendicular to or across the long axis. It’s a nice gemstone for earrings or pendants. Kyanite is believed to aid self-expression, communication and supernatural abilities.

Kyanite is a rare polymorph that displays two separate hardness within one gem; a unique characteristic among gem types. Much like Diamonds, Kyanite has perfect cleavage in one direction, this combined with its varying hardness makes Kyanite quite a challenging gem to cut – thus the quality of faceting for Kyanite is an important value consideration.

METAPHYSICAL:
In ancient times it was believed that a kyanite suspended from a human hair could follow the Earth’s magnetic force like a compass needle. In those times travelers took kyanite along with them, when they entered unknown territories. Kyanite is believed to aid self-expression, communication and supernatural abilities.

Kyanite is a gemstone that does not accumulate negative energies, and it therefore never needs to be cleansed or cleared. As the energy of kyanite is all but unlimited, it is said to be one of the best gemstones for use as an attunement stone. Kyanite is known to induce tranquility and calm, as well as enhancing communication and psychic awareness, as well it eases, enhances and supports mediation efforts.

It is an ideal stone for wearing around the neck , as it has beneficial effects on the throat. It will promote the ability to speak more easily and express oneself more clearly, and will even assist in learning a new language. Anyone who is in a position where they are required to speak at great lengths would benefit from having kyanite around their neck.
